Art matters because it touches people’s hearts and opens their minds. But it is often hard to earn a living wage for creating art. Disabled artists are particularity in jeopardy because being both disabled and an artist means it can be very hard to make ends meet. We would like to highlight the talent of disabled artists in the hopes of being inspired by their work, to learn what being an artist means to them, and to promote their works across our country and beyond.

Submission Guidelines:

Please email us at hello@disabilitywithoutpoverty.ca with the subject header ‘Artivism’ and let us know what you want to do. We can make arrangements to see some of your work (Try not to stress about this part – we’ve been in a pandemic for almost two years) We are not expecting something current for you to show.

We have performance slots completely open for July 2022 onwards.

Centered and Balanced

I am so ready to be free
of expectations and frustrations
when I cannot control
What is happening around me.

I feel like the only control I have
is my feeling of peace and acceptance.

What could be better than
Having control over that?

I want everyone to know
Just how wonderful
peace and acceptance can be.

If only people could experience
being centered and balanced
I think there would be
a lot less frustration around here

June 2021 Roundup

Hosts Caspar Ryan and Luca Patuelli featured artists Jessie Huggett, Jay Ross, and Noah Silletta. A little bit of dance, visual arts, and hip hop music from artists with disabilities across the country. What’s not to like?

July 2021 Roundup

Host Luca Patuelli interviewed Minister Carla Qualtrough, and also introduced his good friend Martin Deschamps. Hear some incredible poems from Jayne Whyte.

Artivism: Victor Enns

Victor Enns was born in Winnipeg and was a founding board member of the Manitoba Writers Guild as well as the executive director of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild. He now lives and writes in BC.
